About Dr. Cherney 

Dr. Stuart B. Cherney, M.D. | Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Stuart Cherney received his medical degree in 1977 from the Albany Medical College, and subsequently completed a residency in orthopaedics at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. His post-doctoral training included a Fellowship at the prestigious Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Knee & Sports Medicine. Practicing since 1983, Dr. Cherney is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery and specializes in Sports Medicine. After establishing the Sports Medicine program at Stony Brook University in 1983, he moved into private practice in Smithtown, NY in 1987. His practice has returned to Stony Brook University Hospital/Stony Brook Orthpaedic Associates as a Clinical Assistant Professor.

 

Currently, Dr. Cherney maintains a full time surgical practice at Stony Brook University. He also maintains affiliations with several hospitals and medical facilities in the area. An adjunct professor in the Stony Brook School of Health Technology and Management, he serves as the medical director of the Stony Brook University Athletic Training Program.

 

Dr. Cherney is the Head Team Physician for all varsity teams at Stony Brook University. In October 2019 he will be inducted into the Stony Brook Athletics Hall of Fame. He also is the team physician and Athletics Healthcare Administrator at St. Joseph's College, Patchogue, NY.

Robin J. Conversano, R.P.A. | Physician Assistant

 

​Sports Medicine 

 

 

Robin J. Conversano is a full time Orthopaedic Physicians Assistant at Stony Brook Orthopaedic Associates. Robin attended Hofstra University where she majored in Exercise Physiology and minored in Athletic Training and Psychology. During her time at Division I Hofstra University, she played lacrosse and excelled as a field hockey goalie. Her senior year she was Hofstra's Female Athlete of the Year and is a member of Hofstra's Athletics Hall of Fame. 

 

Robin was formerly at All-Sport Orthopaedic surgery in Smithtown, NY for 20 years. She attended the Weill Medical College of Cornell University where her clinical rotations focused on orthopaedic surgery. Robin is a certified Physician Assistant through the National Commission of Physician Assistants and has earned special recognition for achievements and knowledge of surgery and is licensed to practice in the State of New York.
